Family Friendly Activities in Cornwall by the Rosevine Hotel

Family holidays can be full of fun and very rewarding. However, as every parent knows, they can also just feel like you are minding children in an unfamiliar location. Finding fun activities ahead of time can alleviate this problem and keep the good times rolling, but sometimes kids’ fun is not something adults will enjoy. If you are planning a visit to Cornwall, you probably have some serious beach time in mind, but there are plenty of activities near the Rosevine that are truly family friendly and fun for every member of your crew.

Cornish Seal Sanctuary

In the small village of Gweek, near Falmouth and Helston, you will find the SEA LIFE TRUST Cornish Seal Sanctuary. The sanctuary is a charity that rescues grey seals and pups, and it also gives a permanent home to animals needing special care. You are likely to see seals in the wild during your visit to Cornwall, but here, you get an up close view! There are even experiences you can book, like Breakfast with a Seal, Keeper for a Day, VIP Cream Tea and Tour, and even a Beaver Tour, because this place is not only about seals. There are beavers, paddock animals looking for a permanent home, and the newest additions, puffins! The Much Ado About Puffin exhibit is a home for rescued puffins, with non-releasable birds from the sanctuary’s sister project, the Beluga Whale Sanctuary in Iceland. Visiting the Cornish Seal Sanctuary is an unforgettable experience, and budget friendly parents will be excited to learn that tickets are good for a year’s worth of re-entry.

Newquay Zoo

The only zoo in Cornwall, the Newquay Zoo is an amazing place to visit with your children. It features hundreds of animals, living in natural-themed exhibits that replicate their wild environments. It is a wonderful place for children to see animals up close and learn about the importance of conservation and protecting wildlife. There are also play areas, gardens, a free-flying bird exhibit, and The Tropical House, home to snakes, birds, and two-toed Hoffmann’s sloths. If you are a family of animal lovers, this is an adventure you must not miss.

Marine Discovery, Penzance

Head out on a unique wildlife watching adventure with Marine Discovery in Penzance. From a sailboat, you will get the opportunity to encounter wildlife of stunning diversity, and because there is no noise from a motor, you are more likely to see these beautiful creatures up close. It is the most environmentally responsible wildlife cruise you will find, and the trips are used to collect scientific data. Take your children out to see grey seals, seabirds, dolphins and porpoises, ocean sunfish, gigantic minke whales and humpback whales, basking sharks, and leatherback turtles in their natural habitat.

Blue Reef Aquarium

Next to Towan Beach in Newquay, opposite the Harbour, is Newquay’s Blue Reef Aquarium. This amazing undersea adventure features 40 naturally-themed displays, including a giant ocean display with an underground walkthrough tunnel. Here, you will encounter colourful fish, tropical sharks, and even a rescued loggerhead turtle. Children and adults alike will enjoy interactive talks and feeding demonstrations, as well as a host of activities and events on school holidays and weekends. It is the perfect activity for a rainy day, too, because it is entirely indoors.

Screech Owl Sanctuary

A Screech Owl Sanctuary might seem oddly specific, but the name is a little misleading. In addition to a huge collection of owls from an astonishing assortment of breeds, this sanctuary looks after many other animals, including alpacas, emus, meerkats, pygmy goats, raccoons, and more. Located in St Columb Maor, between Newquay and Wadebridge, the sanctuary provides care and rehabilitation for owls and other animals, and offers visitors the opportunity to observe these animals in their habitats or schedule a personal owl or animal encounter session. There is also a tea room for relaxation and refreshments, and a playground for the children.
