The Rosevine. Holiday accommodation in Gerrans Bay nr Portscatho, on the beautiful Roseland peninsula in Cornwall.

Gerrans Bay nr Portscatho, Roseland peninsula, Cornwall near St Mawes

The idyllic, safe sandy beach is just at the bottom of the lane.

There's lots to explore nearby. The Roseland is one of the prettiest parts of Cornwall.

Porthcurnick beach, owned by the National Trust, is an idyllic safe sandy beach, and it's just a 2 minute stroll away down the lane. Its calm waters are perfect for swimming and you can go rock pooling at low tide.

We are just four miles from the St Mawes, where you can wander around the small boutiques, visit St Mawes castle or hop on the passenger ferry to Falmouth.

The sheltered coastal village of Portscatho is just along the coastal footpath and we are a stone’s throw from some of the best sailing waters in the UK.

Some suggestions for fun days out with the children, the family or just yourselves:

St Mawes and the Percuil River
Hire a small launch from Roseland Paddle and Sail and motor over to St Mawes. Have lunch, wander around the town and visit St Mawes Castle, before motoring back up the Percuil. www.kingharryscornwall.com

Day out in Falmouth
You can drive the short distance to St Mawes and take the passenger ferry across to Falmouth. Visit The National Maritime Museum at Falmouth. Its a great museum, with lots of interactive displays. You can also go and explore Pendennis Castle. www.falmouth.co.uk - www.nmm.ac.uk

Goonhilly
Learn all about communication at Goonhilly, the world's largest satellite earth station. A good choice for older children. A bus tour gets you up close and personal with the satellite dish. www.goonhilly.bt.com

Day on the Fal
One of our best days out (if the weather is good) is to hire a motor boat at Mylor and spend the day messing about on the water. You can reach St Mawes, Falmouth, up all the small creeks towards Truro, - its great fun! Stopping off at various places including our favourite waterside pub for lunch. www.falriverlinks.co.uk

Get on you bike!!
There are various cycle tracks where you can hire bikes for the day, but our favourite because of the lovely scenery and it takes us back to where we used to live, is the Camel Trail. Cycle from Wadebridge to Padstow and treat yourselves to fish and chips or a Cornish pasty after all the exercise. www.bikesmart.eu

Learn to Sail
We are close to some of the best sailing waters in the UK, and if you are coming to stay for a week, we can arrange for you or the kids or both to have some sailing lessons. The children can join one of the local sailing schools for some group lessons which run throughout the school holidays. www.falwoodenboathire.co.uk

Lost Gardens of Heligan
There is a fascinating story behind Tim Smit’s first big Cornish discovery before The Eden Project was created. Following decades of neglect, Heligan, the seat of the Tremayne family for more than 400 years was gradually woken from a long sleep and brought back from total dereliction to reveal fabulous walled gardens, an historic glasshouse, a crystal grotto, wishing well, and sub tropical jungle. Today Heligan is intensively cultivated throughout the year and a great place to visit with the family. Little ones will enjoy the open spaces to explore, the flock of Wiltshire Horn sheep, and the ducks, geese and chickens. Lobbs farm shop is just across from Heligan, sells great local produce and has introduced tractor farm tours. Tim Smit has written a book about Heligan’s journey which is at the house, and is a recommended read if you stay. www.heligan.com

The Eden Project
If you haven’t yet heard of the Eden project, it is about connecting plants, people and places. There are two gigantic biomes, a tropical biome and a temperate biome. New is The Core, the education centre with lots of interactive displays. For children there are also play areas designed from willow and bamboo. It’s a must if you have never been and if you have been before, it’s ever changing so a return visit is not wasted. www.edenproject.com

Blue Reef Aquarium (Newquay)
The small aquarium on Towan Beach in Newquay is really great for little ones. The exhibits are at a low level perfect for toddlers to see and the staff are hugely enthusiastic and will happily talk for ages. Our boys love it here and afterwards we have a picnic on the beach! www.bluereefaquarium.co.uk

Dairyland
Winner of the National Farm Attraction 2002/3, it has an animal park, bottle feeding lambs, “pat a pet”, pony rides and an assortment of birds and animals. There is also an indoor and outdoor play area, museum of Cornish heritage, a nature trail and a Lamborghini Hay Ride. You can see milking first hand everyday in the best milking parlour you are ever likely to see – it has a domed roof with glitter ball and music! www.dairylandfarmworld.com
